What is a portable gas detector?

A portable gas detector is a handheld device that is used to detect the presence of gases in an area, usually as part of a safety system. These detectors are often used to detect combustible, flammable, and toxic gases, and they can be used in a variety of situations, normally they are carried on the person.

Portable gas detectors can also be used to detect gas leaks in homes and businesses, to detect hazardous gases in industrial settings, and to detect gases in the environment.

What is a fixed gas detector?

A fixed gas detector is a device that is hard-wired and mounted to a structure or wall and used to detect the presence of gases in an area, often as part of a safety system. This type of equipment is important for monitoring a variety of hazardous gases and vapours and is used in a wide range of industrial and commercial applications. Fixed gas detectors can be used to detect combustible, toxic, or oxygen-deficient gases, as well as volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

What is a gas area monitor?

An area monitor (perimeter monitor) is a device or devices that are used to measure the environmental conditions in a defined area or location. Most commonly used to measure variables such as temperature, humidity, air quality, and light levels.

Typically an area monitor is self contained with an internal battery to allow it to run for an extended period of time and is used to detect and alert people to the presence of hazardous in the environment, an Area Gas Monitor is primarily used for perimeter protection for hazardous gases. Although workers should wear portable gas detectors when working in or around hazardous areas, some applications are better suited for continuous area monitoring.

An area monitor provides benefits similar to those of a fixed gas detection system. However, they can be transported and repositioned to suit your needs. Area monitors are available with a wide range of sensor options, including your standard oxygen, flammable, and toxic sensors, while some can monitor VOCs using PID detection.

When do I need a gas detector?

A gas detector should be used in any environment where combustible or toxic gases may be present. This includes areas such as industrial plants, laboratories, factories, wastewater treatment, oil & gas refinery, and extraction, confined space entry, and any other areas where hazardous gases could be present. If you are unsure if gas is present then it is always best to carry out a risk assessment on the potential risks of the work being carried out.
